According to a 2012 report by market research firm Mintel, gluten-free menu items have increased 280 percent from 2008 to 2011. Manufacturing of gluten-free foods is also on the rise — having tripled since 2007.
Many gluten-free products were seen at the Natural Products Expo, held in Anaheim over the weekend. Take a look at the new products Register reporter Mark Eades discovered in this video report (above).

In the meantime, here’s a partial list of Orange County restaurants that cater to consumers with gluten allergies:
- Gluten free dough/pizza can be requested at Red Brick Pizza, Pizza Land, Zito’s Pizza , Zpizza, BJ’s Restaurants, Selma’s Chicago Pizzeria in San Clemente and Vito’s Pizza & Italian Ristorante in San Juan Capistrano.
- The menu at Chipotle Mexican Grill is gluten-free, except the flour tortillas.
- Upon request, In-N-Out Burger will cook meat on a separate skillet from the buns and will use a clean spatula and new gloves.
- Yard House restaurants (multiple) offers gluten sensitive dishes. “We have modified the dishes to eliminate any ingredients containing gluten but because it’s a shared kitchen, there is a possibility of cross contact,” the restaurant says.
- Rutabegorz (Tustin, Orange and Fullerton) offers a separate gluten-free menu upon request.
- Newport Rib Company in Costa Mesa uses gluten-free rubs and sauces and has gluten-free cornbread.
- The Original Pancake House serves gluten-free pancakes, waffles, crepes and will soon have gluten-free French toast. (Orange and Anaheim locations only.)
- Stonefire Grill restaurants are launching a new menu that directs guests how to eat gluten-free based on their menu items. Stay tuned for more information.
- Other local chains and independent restaurants with gluten-free options include: True Food Kitchen, P.F. Chang’s, Opus of Orange, Mimi’s Café, Sandy’s Beach Grill in Huntington Beach, Taco Mesa, Ruby’s Diner, Byblos Café in Orange, The Veggie Grill, Native Foods, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar in Newport Beach, Chick-fil-A, Chili’s Grill & Bar, Islands Fine Burgers & Drinks, Olive Garden, Red Robin, Outback Steakhouse, Boston Market, Buca Di Beppo, California Pizza Kitchen, Buffalo Wild Wings and Z’Tejas in Costa Mesa.
